Your $50,000 Private School Is Lying to You
Why your “straight A” student is actually behind.
It’s true. That private school that you’re paying an arm and a leg for? It’s definitely not turning your kid into a genius like you hope.
“But MacKenzie, my kid gets straight A’s. How can you say that? This obviously doesn’t apply to me, right?”
Unfortunately, it does. And I’ll show you why.
Before I do, just know: I’m not condemning traditional teachers, and I’m certainly not going after the students. I’m simply exposing the guts of an outdated system where “straight A’s” don’t translate to real life anymore, where the value of “100%” has diminished astronomically.
Because that’s what most parents don’t know: their “straight A” student is actually behind. That’s the bad news.
The good news? We can catch them up. Fast.
How private schools are failing your kid (even the high-end ones)
All across the country, Alpha Schools have just onboarded hundreds of new students. (We’re growing!) And what we’ve found has been…eye-opening.
For context, many Alpha students transfer in from local high-end private schools. Once a student enrolls, they have to take an NWEA MAP test, the most efficient way for us to “place” students. Because Alpha’s model is based on actual mastery of knowledge, not age, MAP testing reveals what students do or don’t know, what holes they need filled, and what curriculum they will need to start with.
All that to say, with our recent influx of new MAP tests rolling in, we’ve gathered a painfully insightful look at the state of “high end” private school education.
Those “straight A” students transferring into Alpha? On average, they’re up to three grade levels behind. This means they cannot pass a standardized test covering material from three years prior. In reality, this looks like a 7th grader missing a significant number of questions on a 4th grade test.
For “B” students, it’s even worse: they’re three to seven grade levels behind.
And it only goes south from there.
“Grade inflation” isn’t some abstract idea floating around in the education ether. It’s real. It’s ugly. And it’s absolutely impacting your kid in a negative way, whether you realize it or not.
We have high school freshmen (again: coming from renowned, high-end private schools) coming to Alpha who cannot write a grammatically correct 3rd grade sentence. Who have never seen a semicolon in their life. You could be paying an astronomical amount of money for your kid to go to a high-end private school…but your kid can’t do basic math?
The problem is that schools, even the prestigious ones, really only hand out A’s and B’s. (C’s, D’s, and F’s are becoming increasingly more rare.) Why? To keep parents and administration happy? To maintain a good reputation? I’m not sure.
What I do know is that school has genuinely taken a turn for the worst.
One last time for unwavering clarity: I am not attacking these kids, their parents, or their teachers. I am simply sharing the data with you.
If you are shelling out $40,000 – $50,000 for an “elite” private school, there is a large chance your straight A kid will still walk away years behind.
Okay, so, that’s the bad news. (It’s pretty bad, I know.)
Ready for the good?

The research shows: the average grade-level subject (say, fourth-grade math) need only take about 20 to 30 hours to master. That’s it. Now, don’t skip over that part. Traditional schools run for 180 days, one hour a day per subject, plus roughly two hours of homework each night.
That feels…terribly inefficient, right?
It totally is. But this is all we’ve ever known. This is what “school” means to us. So naturally, when you hear your kid is three years behind, you’re probably going to panic and assume the worst: “But it’s going to take them hundreds of hours to catch up!”

Look, I get it. Alpha School isn’t cheap. (Transforming education has to start somewhere.)

MacKenzie...this is an extraordinarily important article. I'm a parent that spent the big bucks for our son's K-12 education at an important and expensive private school here in the greater Detroit area. I was happy with his experience; however, I have no idea where he would place in the MAP testing. State Boards of education should require all schools (Public, Private, Charter, Home School) should be required to publish MAP scores/std. deviation for each grade level and States should require a minimum of 90th percentile to demonstrate each school's performance.
Your school is just as expensive and from what I understand, your school will kick out kids who aren't performing well, and still charge the parents as if it's some software subscription....
