The example of navigation with or without a GPS hits hard. I am always amazed by how little I retain in terms of memorized directions and sense of where I am on the map when I use a GPS. Even when I drive to the same place by GPS multiple times! I have tried to avoid using it now if I expect to ever drive to the same place again. Looking at a map beforehand then remembering the directions burns it in your brain so much better, even with a wrong turn or two.

You make important points, although if we are being more precise, we need to make a distinction between cognitive "outsourcing" (concerning) and "offloading" (not concerning).

I notice that "read books" is absent from your list of recommendations. Do you think that's important, necessary, or not necessary? Are students at Alpha School required to read books, or do they only do it if they choose to?
